The Brenham pallasite meteorite was discovered in 1882 in association with a 50 foot impact crater near Brenham, Kansas. This impact crater is estimated to be 1,000 years old and is one of the smallest known impact craters on the planet. Since the initial discovery, many pallasite masses have been recovered from the surrounding area. Parts of the Brenham meteorite are filled with beautiful yellow-green peridot crystals while large swaths of metallic areas are devoid of these space gems.

What Is A Pallasite?

Pallasites are a rare subclass of stony-iron meteorites. They are believed to originate from the boundary between the metal-rich core and rocky mantle of a differentiated asteroid or protoplanet that was shattered through a collision in the early solar system. Here are some key characteristics of pallasites:

Composition: Pallasites consist of a combination of silicate minerals and metallic iron-nickel. The silicate minerals in pallasites are typically olivine, which is a greenish-yellow mineral, and they are embedded in a matrix of metallic iron-nickel alloy. The olivine crystals found in pallasites can be quite large and are often translucent, giving pallasites their distinctive appearance. The contrast between the greenish olivine and the metallic matrix makes pallasites visually striking.

Octahedral Structure: Pallasites often exhibit an octahedral internal structure, with the olivine crystals arranged in a geometric pattern resembling an octahedron. This arrangement is a result of the slow cooling process that occurred within the parent body from which they originated.

Rareness: Pallasites are considered one of the rarest types of meteorites, making up only a small fraction of all meteorites found on Earth. Collectors and researchers prize them due to their unique composition and aesthetic appeal.

Even more so than most iron meteorites, pallasites are susceptible to rusting and deterioration from moisture in the atmosphere. All of the pallasite material we sell has been stabilized in some way, which will help with this issue but care still needs to be taken to keep your treasure in good condition. They need to be stored in a dry, moisture-free environment, preferably with a corrosion inhibitor such as silica gel beads or a dehumidifier.
