SELENITE CRYSTALS SPECIMENS

Selenite is a transparent to translucent variety of gypsum known for its silky luster, striated crystal faces, and often delicate, blade-like form. These crystals form in evaporative environments where mineral-rich waters slowly deposit layers of calcium sulfate. Selenite is relatively soft—measuring 2 on the Mohs hardness scale—and can be easily scratched with a fingernail, making it a mineral best appreciated for display rather than durability.

One of the most famous sources of selenite is the Naica Mine in Chihuahua, Mexico, where extraordinary crystals have grown to lengths exceeding 30 feet in the now-closed "Cave of the Crystals." While specimens from that specific chamber are not available to collectors, the region has also produced more accessible selenite crystals exhibiting similar clarity and beauty. These impressive specimens showcase the natural elegance of gypsum in its purest form.
