First described in 1874, veszelyite was discovered at Ocna de Fier in Romania, a classic mining locality known for complex ore mineralization. The mineral was named in honor of Ágost (Gusztáv) Veszely, a Hungarian mining engineer connected to its identification. Like many rare phosphates, veszelyite has remained more of a scientific and collector’s curiosity than a mineral of industrial importance. It occurs in quantities far too small to serve as an ore, and its primary value lies in its rarity, beauty, and mineralogical significance.

Collectors often associate veszelyite with other secondary copper minerals such as pseudomalachite, malachite, libethenite, and hemimorphite.
