1.2" Fusion Crusted Sikhote-Alin Iron Meteorite (34.2 grams) - Russia

This is a 1.2" wide (34.2 grams) "fusion crusted" fragment of the iron-nickel (coarse octahedrite) Sikhote-Alin meteor, collected from the strewn field in the Sikhote-Alin Mountains of Russia.

This meteor, moving about 50,400 kilometers per hour pierced the atmosphere over Russia on February 12th, 1947 at 10:38 AM. The bright flash and loud boom were witnessed up to 300km away from the site of impact. The fall of this 23,000+ kg (post-atmospheric mass) meteorite produced 106 impact holes, some up to 28 meters in diameter, over an area of 100m x 660m in the thick forest of the Sikhote-Alin Mountains. Many fragments weighing up to 300kg in weight have been recovered. Prior to entering the atmosphere, it's believed the meteoroid had a mass of approximately 100,000kg.

Iron type meteorites are often composed of iron and other metals, primarily nickel. These metallic meteorites are typically the easiest to identify after millions of years post-impact, because they are quite different from the surrounding material, especially when it comes to their mass-to-surface area ratio. They are exceptionally heavy for their size as iron is one of the metals with a high density. Extraterrestrial iron and nickel are believed to be chunks of the cores of the planetary devastation that is now the asteroid belt.
