3.6" Bright Orange Wulfenite Crystals - Rowley Mine, AZ
This is a cluster of relatively large, bright orange windowpane wulfenite crystals on a barite matrix from the Rowley Mine in Arizona. The specimen is 3.6 x 1.8" in size, and is very eye catching. Most of the crystals have some chipping and damage, however this is pretty typical due to the delicate nature of this mineral. All of the largest tabular wulfenite is smothered in smaller wulfenite crystals.
About the Rowley Mine
The Rowley Mine, located in the Painted Rock Mountains of Maricopa County, Arizona, is one of the world's most celebrated localities for wulfenite, producing brilliant orange to golden-yellow tabular crystals that rank among the finest known. The mine is especially famous for aesthetic combinations of transparent, glassy wulfenite crystals perched atop vivid red to orange mimetite, creating specimens that are instantly recognizable to collectors. Wulfenite is a lead based, molybdate mineral that forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidation zones of hydrothermal lead deposits. Its color typically ranges anywhere between yellow to bright orange, red, brown, and occasionally bi-colored. Typically forming as tabular, stubby, or pyramidal crystals, this unique mineral can be both brilliantly transparent and opaque.
While these crystals are safe to hold, due to the fact that they are lead-based we strongly recommend washing your hands after handling.
