Cactus quartz, often also referred to as spirit quartz, is a variety of quartz characterized by second-generation druzy crystals growing on the faces of larger quartz crystals. The small second-generation crystals point away from the prism and their orientation is not related to the crystallographic orientation of the central crystal. Cactus quartz is currently only known from the Magaliesberg Mountains region of South Africa, and comes in a variety of shades ranging from white to deep purple to orange colorations. The deep purple amethyst points are the rarest and most coveted by collectors.

About Smoky Amethyst

Smoky amethyst is a natural variety of quartz that combines the purple coloration of amethyst with the gray to brown tones characteristic of smoky quartz. Both colors develop after quartz crystallizes and are linked to trace impurities and natural irradiation. Amethyst’s purple color is primarily associated with trace amounts of iron incorporated into the quartz structure, which undergo changes in oxidation state when exposed to natural radiation from surrounding rocks. Smoky coloration develops through irradiation-induced defects involving aluminum impurities within the crystal lattice. When both color-producing mechanisms occur within the same crystal, the result can be quartz displaying varying mixtures or zones of purple, smoky gray, and brown.

These crystals typically form in cavities, fractures, or hydrothermal veins where silica-rich fluids deposit quartz over time. After crystallization, prolonged exposure to naturally occurring radiation from minerals in the surrounding host rock can gradually modify color centers within the quartz. Differences in trace-element concentrations, radiation exposure, and crystal growth can produce distinct smoky and amethyst zoning, sometimes with one color concentrated toward the crystal termination or along particular growth zones.
