6.3" Polished Bauxite (Aluminum Ore) Section - Australia

This is an incredible, 6.3" wide section of bauxite mined near Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. One side of the specimen has been cut flat and polished to a glossy-finish. It displays nicely on the accompanied acrylic display stand.

Bauxite is the world's primary ore of aluminum. It is a heterogeneous material consisting mostly of the minerals gibbsite (Al(OH)3), boehmite (γ-AlO(OH)) and diaspore (α-AlO(OH)), mixed with the two iron oxides, goethite and hematite, the clay mineral kaolinite, as well as small amounts of anatase (TiO2) and ilmenite (FeTiO3 or FeOTiO2). Australia and China are the world's two primary producers of this ore.
