7.2" Polished Bauxite (Aluminum Ore) Slab - Australia
This is a beautiful, 7.2" wide slab of bauxite mined near Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. Both sides of the specimen have been cut flat and one has been polished to a glossy-finish. It displays nicely on the accompanied acrylic display stand.
Bauxite is the world's primary ore of aluminum. It consists mostly of the minerals gibbsite (Al(OH)3), boehmite (γ-AlO(OH)) and diaspore (α-AlO(OH)), mixed with the two iron oxides, goethite and hematite, the clay mineral kaolinite, as well as small amounts of anatase (TiO2) and ilmenite (FeTiO3 or FeOTiO2). Australia and China are the worlds two primary producers of this ore.
