1.75" Excellent Scotoharpes Trilobite - Boudib, Morocco

This is an exceptionally detailed, 1.75" long specimen of Scotoharpes, a distinctive harpetid trilobite from Morocco. Its most striking feature is the dramatically expanded cephalic shield, believed to have helped the trilobite remain supported on soft seafloor sediments. This elaborate shield is covered in numerous tiny sensory pits, which may once have supported delicate, hairlike structures.

The specimen exhibits excellent preservation and meticulous preparation, beautifully showcasing its intricate anatomy. Total shell restoration is approximately 2%.

About Trilobites

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
