2.3" Multi-Toned Hollardops Trilobite With Orange Eyes
This is a fascinating 2.3" long Hollardops trilobite fossil, quarried near Ofaten, Morocco. It displays very nice detail, including visible eye facets. The trilobite has a natural, multi-toned shell coloration, along with the orange eye preservation sometimes seen in specimens from this locality. Nearly all of the surrounding limestone has been painstakingly removed with mechanical tools, leaving the trilobite “flying” on a small pedestal of rock. There is no restoration.
About Trilobites
Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
