26.2" Fossil Raptor (Anzu wyliei) Tibia from Right Leg - Montana

This is a rare and beautifully preserved tibia from the right leg of the recently (2014) described giant raptor Anzu wyliei. Dubbed by media as the "chicken from hell", this dinosaur grew up to 11 feet in length and sported a large prominent crest on its head. The name Anzu refers to a feathered demon in ancient Mesopotamian mythology.

This impressive specimen measures 26.2" long and was collected from the Hell Creek Formation of Montana. One particularly interesting feature is the preservation of distinct depressions along a crest on the proximal end of the bone, marking areas where muscles and other soft tissues once attached.

The bone does not include a display stand. However, a custom metal display stand can be fabricated upon request. For pricing and additional information, please contact support@fossilera.com.

The bone is heavily fragmented along the diaphysis as a result of geologic pressures over millions of years. While no significant reconstruction restoration can be found along the diaphysis, there are countless cracks that required minor gap fill to hold the bone together. The proximal epiphysis of the bone has a relatively large section of gap fill restoration.

The creature's appearance – "big crests on their skulls, a beak, no teeth, and a very bird-like skeleton", and its discovery in the Hell Creek Formation led to it being jokingly nicknamed the "chicken from hell". Matthew Lamanna, who devised the species' name, originally wanted to use a Latin or Greek version of "chicken from hell". However, he found that the nickname did not work so well in those languages.

The Hell Creek Formation

Renowned for both its age and rich sedimentary layers, the Hell Creek Formation is one of the most intensively studied fossil-bearing regions on Earth. To date, scientists have documented 158 genera of animals and 64 genera of plants from its rocks, with new finds emerging regularly. Beyond iconic dinosaurs such as tyrannosaurs, ceratopsians, and hadrosaurs, the formation has produced an extraordinary array of life, including amphibians, reptiles, lizards, snakes, turtles, fish, sharks, birds, and early mammals. Together, these fossils provide the most complete picture of the ecosystems that thrived just before the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event.
