9.45" Fossil Dromaeosaurid Theropod Dinosaur Tibia - Montana

This is an exceptionally rare, 9.45" long complete tibia from a dromaeosaurid theropod dinosaur, collected from the Late Cretaceous-aged Hell Creek Formation in Custer County, Montana. The tibia is one of the primary weight-bearing bones of the lower hindlimb, playing an important role in locomotion for these agile, predatory dinosaurs. Dromaeosaurid skeletal material is exceedingly uncommon in the Hell Creek Formation, particularly identifiable and substantially complete limb bones. While isolated teeth are occasionally recovered, associated or complete skeletal elements are exceptionally scarce, making this a remarkable fossil from one of the most recognizable groups of predatory dinosaurs.

The bone retains its full length, including both epiphyses (articular ends), although it has undergone some compression and fragmentation during fossilization. There are multiple repaired fractures extending through the diaphysis (shaft), while both epiphyses exhibit areas of crushing and fragmentation that required gap-fill restoration and adhesive stabilization. Despite these repairs, the specimen preserves its overall anatomical form and represents a rare opportunity to acquire a substantially complete dromaeosaurid limb bone from the iconic Hell Creek Formation.

The Hell Creek Formation

Renowned for both its age and rich sedimentary layers, the Hell Creek Formation is one of the most intensively studied fossil-bearing regions on Earth. To date, scientists have documented 158 genera of animals and 64 genera of plants from its rocks, with new finds emerging regularly. Beyond iconic dinosaurs such as tyrannosaurs, ceratopsians, and hadrosaurs, the formation has produced an extraordinary array of life, including amphibians, reptiles, lizards, snakes, turtles, fish, sharks, birds, and early mammals. Together, these fossils provide the most complete picture of the ecosystems that thrived just before the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event.
