This is a stunning, table-top–sized round of Jurassic petrified wood from the storied Junggar Basin of China, cut from the pristine heart of a massive ancient log. Measuring 29 x 18.5 inches and just over 1" thick, it’s substantial enough to serve as a unique small table top, an eye-catching wall display, or a statement piece in any room. An adjustable metal stand is included for effortless presentation.
Both sides have been expertly polished to a flawless, mirror-like finish—no haze, no dull spots, just gleaming clarity that showcases the rich reddish-brown and fiery orange tones locked within this 160-million-year-old treasure. Bold, organic, and undeniably sculptural, it stands as a true work of natural art.
Please note: the rough petrified wood was legally exported from China several years before the broad fossil export restrictions went into effect in 2011.
What Is Petrified Wood
Petrified wood is the name given to wood that has been turned into stone (fossilized) through the process of permineralization. In this process, all of the organic matter becomes replaced by minerals, while much of the original structure, such as tree rings, is retained. For this to happen, the wood needs to be buried in an environment low in oxygen to prevent decomposition and with flowing, mineral-laden water, so minerals may replace structures. The coloration is caused by various minerals/impurities present in the water during fossilization. For example, red colors in many cases can be attributed to iron compounds, greens due to copper, and so on.
