3.1" Huge, Spiny Dicranurus Trilobite With Reedops - Lghaft, Morocco

This is an exceptional, 3.1" long specimen of Dicranurus monstrosus, one of the most spectacular and highly sought-after trilobites from the Devonian of Morocco. Remarkably large and displaying the species' extraordinary array of sweeping, curved spines and distinctive head horns, this impressive specimen has been meticulously prepared to reveal its elaborate anatomy in stunning three-dimensional detail. Adding to its appeal is a small, naturally associated, enrolled Reedops trilobite preserved on the same limestone matrix, creating a particularly distinctive display.

Dating back approximately 390 million years, Dicranurus monstrosus is prized for its otherworldly appearance and the exceptional skill required to prepare its intricate spination. Restoration is limited to approximately 1–2% of the shell, confined to the thorax. The tips of the genal spines are naturally absent, having broken away prior to fossilization. With its impressive size, elaborate preparation, and associated trilobite, this is a remarkable collector-grade specimen of one of the most iconic trilobites ever discovered.
About Trilobites

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
