4.1" Fossil Fern (Pecopteris) Nodule Pos/Neg - Indiana
This is a very nice, 4.1" fern fossil (Pecopteris sp.) from the Dugger Formation of Vigo County, Indiana. It is preserved inside an ironstone nodule which is underlain by part of the famous Carbondale Formation. Under magnification the detail of this specimen stands out. Both the positive (convex) and negative (concave) sides of the fossil nodule are included.

Pecopteris is a form classification (taxa) for the leaves of a fern associated with the tree fern, Psaronius. It is one of the most common Pennsylvanian age plants and grew up to ten meters (30 feet) tall and produced about 7,000 spores per leaf.
