This is a 5.85" fossil seed fern (Sphenopteris) plate, collected from the Breathitt Formation of Leslie County, Kentucky. This specimen contains scattered sections of leaflets, pinnules (branches of leaflets) and stems. It comes from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian-aged forests that formed the coal shales of Kentucky and Ohio.
Sphenopteris is an extinct genus of fern that reproduced from seed, as opposed to sporophyte reproduction of most modern ferns.
