5" Line of Four Asaphellus Trilobites - Fezouata Formation
This is a really cool piece from the Fezouata Formation of Morocco. It is a cluster of four Asaphellus trilobites preserved in a line. The largest of the trilobites measures about 1.25" in length and the entire piece is 5 x 3.1". Total restoration is about 3% along repaired cracks.
It has been theorized that the lines of trilobites sometimes found in this formation represent migratory behavior in the fossil record. A paper was published recently describing similar fossils from this same locality.

About Trilobites
Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
