7.5" Disarticulated Fossil Oreodont (Merycoidodon) Skull - South Dakota
This is a unique oreodont (Merycoidodon culbertsoni) fossil from the White River Formation in South Dakota. It's a disarticulated skull that's held together by matrix, creating a unique fossil presentation. Both the upper and lower jaw are from the same animal. The upper skull measures 7.5" long and the dimensions of the entire specimen are 9.4 x 6.4 x 3.5".
It is accompanied by a display stand to assist with presentation.
The majority of the teeth on this specimen are natural, though a few have repair or restoration. Each of the canines has either repair or restoration. The bone preservation itself is very nice, requiring very little repair or restoration (less than 3%).

Oreodonts are an extinct mammal most closely related to camels and pigs. They have no close relatives living today. They were herbivorous, with short faces and fang-like canine teeth. About the size of a sheep, they roamed the plains of North America in huge numbers during the Oligocene period.
