8.2" Fossil Oreodont (Merycoidodon) Skull - South Dakota
This is a 8.2" long fossil skull of an oreodont (Merycoidodon culbertsoni), collected from the White River Formation (Brule subunit) in South Dakota and would be approximately 30-33 million years old. The majority of the teeth on this skull are natural and complete.
It is accompanied by an acrylic display stand to assist with presentation.
The lower right canine is completely restored, along with all but one of the incisors. There is some restoration along the posterior-ventral edge of the left side of the mandible and some repairs through the right side. Additional restoration can be found in the form of gap fill in spots across the upper skull, with the entire right zygomatic arch being restored.

Oreodonts are an extinct mammal most closely related to camels and pigs. They have no close relatives living today. They were herbivorous, with short faces and fang-like canine teeth. About the size of a sheep, they roamed the plains of North America in huge numbers during the Oligocene period.
