Superb, 6.6" Fossil Oreodont (Merycoidodon) Skull - South Dakota
This is a gorgeous, 6.6" long fossil skull of a juvenile oreodont (Merycoidodon culbertsoni), collected from the White River Formation (Brule subunit) in South Dakota and would be approximately 30-33 million years old. This skull is approximately 97% complete and bears colorful preservation. All of the teeth are natural, in exceptional condition, and unrestored.
It is accompanied by an acrylic display stand to assist with presentation.
There is some repair work along the angles of the right and left sides of the mandible. Gap fill restoration can be found in spots across the posterior half of the upper skull, mainly around the nuchal crest. Portions of the right zygomatic arch have been restored.

Oreodonts are an extinct mammal most closely related to camels and pigs. They have no close relatives living today. They were herbivorous, with short faces and fang-like canine teeth. About the size of a sheep, they roamed the plains of North America in huge numbers during the Oligocene period.
