9.1" Carboniferous Fossil Fern (Neuropteris) - France
This is a gorgeous fern (Neuropteris cordata) fossils from the Late Carboniferous-aged Montceau-les-Mines Lagerstatte of France. This formation is Stephanian Stage in age, or approximately 300 million years old. The entire fern fossil measures 9.1" long and is nicely centered on a rectangular-cut, 9.4 x 6.45" slab of rock.

Neuropteris is an extinct genus of fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction like most modern ferns. As with most seed ferns, Neurodontopteridaceae grew in tree form.
