Bargain, 3" Psychopyge Trilobite - Issoumour, Morocco

This is a bargain, 3" long Psychopyge elegans trilobite collected from the Tazoulait Formation at Issoumour, Morocco. This species has a odd rostrum coming off the front of its head whose purpose is still up for debate. This specimen is bargain priced because most of the tiny spines that line its thorax are missing and quite a few of the pleural spines are restored. At also appears to have been remounted on the rock, possibly having been round ventral.

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
