Cluster of Four Trilobites - Fezouata Formation

This is a cluster of four well-preserved Asaphellus trilobites alongside the anterior half of a Bathycheilus trilobite, collected from the Fezouata Formation of Morocco. A small gastropod can also be found on the cluster of fossils. Trilobites from this locality are often found in lines, which has sometimes been interpreted as fossilized migratory behavior. We tend to think it's more likely the orientation is due to currents sweeping the trilobites into wave depressions in the ocean floor.

The entire piece measures 6.8 x 4" and the trilobites are between .55" and 1.6" in length. Preparation is very good and there is only one repaired crack through the specimen. It comes with a display stand.

About Trilobites

Trilobites are an extinct class of marine arthropods that thrived for nearly 270 million years, from the early Cambrian to the end of the Permian period (around 521 to 252 million years ago). They are one of the most successful and diverse groups in the history of life, with over 25,000 described species spanning a wide range of sizes, shapes, and ecological niches. Known for their distinctive, segmented exoskeletons, trilobites provide invaluable insights into the evolutionary history of arthropods and the dynamics of ancient marine ecosystems.
