Cluster Of Orange Trinucleid Trilobite (Declivolithus) Fossils

This is an attractive cluster of Declivolithus (Nankinolithus) titan trilobites from the Lower Ktaoua Formation of Morocco. The 7.2 x 4.5" shale slab contains six complete trilobites along with several partial specimens, all exhibiting natural orange coloration.

This species is particularly distinctive for the **large, pronounced pits covering its cephalon (head shield)**. While their exact function remains uncertain, researchers have suggested they may have served a sensory role or played a part in filter feeding. These unusual features make Declivolithus titan one of the more visually interesting Ordovician trilobites.

Includes an acrylic display stand.

About Trilobites

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
