What Is Amazonite?

Amazonite is the green variety of the mineral microcline feldspar, one of the three minerals in the potassium feldspar group. These minerals are extremely closely related and can only be accurately identified via x-ray analysis. Crystals of Amazonite is triclinic in form and often very large, though very brittle because it has two directions of perfect cleavage. It is named after the Amazon River, where it was thought to be originally found, though there is no evidence to suggest that it occurs in the region.

What Gives Amazonite Its Color?

Amazonite’s color has often been the source of much debate. Until recently, it was believed that the green coloration was related to copper content, sicne copper based minerals share similar colors to amazonite, but we now know this is not the case. A series of successive studies beginning in 1985 point to lead as the primary culprit of amazonite’s blue-green coloration. Additional proposed factors include rubidium, thallium, and lead monoxide. In 2010, iron was included in the mix of possible pigmentation elements. Much is still being discovered, but what we do know is that a variety of metals EXCEPT copper (the most likely candidate), are responsible for the attractive green that gem collectors seek out.

How Does Amazonite Form?

Amazonite (microcline) will typically form as the recrystallization of feldspar, which accounts for the banding in some varieties of the mineral. It can also form directly as magma crystallizes and via other hydrothermal processes as is seen in metamorphic and igneous rocks.

Where Is Amazonite Found?

Russia, Myanmar, and Ethiopia are known to produce an abundance of top-quality, gem-ready, deep-green and visually stunning amazonite. In the United States, most amazonite comes out of Virginia and Colorado: Colorado is world-famous for its spectacular specimens.

Common Associations

As part of the feldspar group, amazonite is often associated with feldspars and other silica-based minerals. Quartz, schorl, other tourmalines, and albite are all very common associations of amazonite in metamorphic veins and cavities deep underground.
