About Barite From the Xiefang Mine

Barite from the Xiefang Mine in China is prized for its crisp, architectural crystal forms and bright, clean luster. Specimens commonly feature bladed to tabular barite crystals arranged in radiating “fan” clusters, stacked rosettes, or tight sheaves that create dramatic symmetry and strong visual depth. Pieces from Xiefang are often appreciated for their sharp edges, well-defined terminations, and attractive contrast between translucent honey-to-amber tones and lighter, silvery to white areas. These barites are also frequently found in association with fluorite, adding beautiful color contrast and making the combinations especially desirable among collectors.

Barite (barium sulfate, BaSO₄) is a relatively dense mineral—its name comes from the Greek barys, meaning “heavy”—and it’s a classic collector species found in a wide range of hydrothermal and sedimentary environments. On the Mohs scale it’s fairly soft (around 3–3.5), so it’s best handled gently and kept away from abrasion.
