3.2" Polished Bauxite (Aluminum Ore) Chunk - Australia
This is an interesting, polished chunk of bauxite mined near Kalgoorlie in Western Australia.
Bauxite is the world's primary ore of aluminum. It consists mostly of the minerals gibbsite (Al(OH)3), boehmite (γ-AlO(OH)) and diaspore (α-AlO(OH)), mixed with the two iron oxides, goethite and hematite, the clay mineral kaolinite, as well as small amounts of anatase (TiO2) and ilmenite (FeTiO3 or FeOTiO2). Australia and China are the worlds two primary producers of this ore.
