3.85" Polished Crystalline Hematite & Magnetite Slab - Nevada

This is an excellent example of crystalline hematite with magnetite that has been cut into a 3.85" wide slab and polished to a matte finish. Minor amounts of sphalerite can also be found within the specimen. The magnetite within the slab exhibits temporary magnetic properties when held near a permanent magnet.

It comes with an acrylic display stand.

Hematite is a fairly common mineral, typically responsible for the red-brown colorations found in other minerals and rocks. Its chemical composition is Fe2O3, occasionally containing small amounts of titanium (variable formula (Fe,Ti)2O3). Much of the time, non-crystalline hematite specimens are the result of a transformation from limonite following loss of water.

About Magnetite

Magnetite is a naturally occurring iron oxide mineral with the chemical formula Fe₃O₄. It is one of the most magnetic minerals found on Earth, a property that has made it historically significant in the development of early navigation tools like the compass. Magnetite typically forms in igneous and metamorphic rocks, and its crystals often appear as octahedrons or granular masses with a metallic luster and a deep black to dark gray color.

The mineral is composed of both ferrous (Fe²⁺) and ferric (Fe³⁺) iron, giving it its strong magnetic characteristics and distinguishing it from other iron oxides such as hematite.
