5.1" Brilliant Peacock Ore with Epidote - Mexico
This is a large piece of very colorful peacock ore from Mexico. There are green epidote crystals throughout this specimen.
About Peacock Ore
Often called “Peacock Ore” for its vivid, iridescent colors, this material is actually chalcopyrite that has been treated with acid. The treatment replicates a natural process that forms the much rarer copper mineral bornite.
Chalcopyrite itself is a brass-yellow mineral and a major source of copper. Over time, exposure to the elements causes it to lose its metallic shine, developing a dull gray-green tarnish. When exposed to acids, this surface can transform into striking hues of red, blue, and purple, creating the colorful effect it’s known for.
