5" Brassy Chalcopyrite w/ Sphalerite and Galena - Bulgaria

This is a cluster of lustrous, opaque sphalerite crystals that formed in association with brassy chalcopyrite, galena, and quartz crystals, collected from one of the many mines in the Madan Municipality of Bulgaria. There is an unidentified blue mineral along the edges and underside of the specimen, resembling chrysocolla.

Comes with an acrylic display stand.

The Madan ore fields are located in the Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, near its border with Greece. This long stretch of mountain range in southeastern Europe is home to a variety of incredible minerals: sulfides in particular show a great variety here. The sulfides pyrite and arsenopyrite, both mined consistently from the Rhodopes, sometimes also contain gold ore. However, they also typically contain relatively high amounts of cyanide. Because of this, these sulfides must undergo an additional cyanide extraction process before the gold can be extracted and used.

Other sulfides like galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite can be found throughout this mountain range in all shapes and sizes.

Galena is a lead-based mineral and the primary ore of lead, and has been used for its lead content for thousands of years. Galena typically displays a gray metallic luster and forms cubes or octahedral crystals. The chemical composition of galena is PbS.

While galena will not pose a health hazard by sitting on the shelf or even from casual handling, we suggest washing hands following handling due to the mineral's lead content.
