This is a stunning amethyst "thumbs up" geode pair from Brazil. The geode has been cut in half and mounted onto two stands, creating a beautiful geode pair display. The dark-purple amethyst crystals are of the highest quality and the "rind" has been flawlessly polished all the way around. The back side of each geode half is natural, featuring a green rock matrix that contrasts nicely with the purple amethyst crystals.
We can pretty much guarantee this incredible specimen will look even better in person than in the photos!
Each half of this geode includes the custom metal display stand shown in the photos. One geode half measures 31.8" tall, 19.7" wide at its widest point, and is 8.5" thick. The other half is also 31.8" tall, but is 19.4" wide, and 8" thick. On the stand, each half stands just over 55" tall (55.8" and 55.2"). Including the metal stands, combined these geode halves weigh just over 305 lbs.
Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz (SiO2) and owes its violet color to natural irradiation, iron impurities, and the presence of trace elements, which result in complex crystal lattice substitutions. It is considered a semi-precious gemstone, and just two centuries ago was considered to have a value on par with diamonds, sapphires and rubies.
Much of the world’s amethyst comes from extensive deposits in Southern Brazil that have been heavily mined for about a century. The amethyst occurs in large cavities or geodes within volcanic rocks and the coloration and crystal size can vary greatly.
