Natural Spain Cubic Pyrite Crystal Mining Kit
We are very excited to offer these new crystal mining kits! Each kit includes a section of rock that's packed with natural cubic pyrite crystals. While these specimens can be prepared by hand tools to expose the cubes, the intention of these kits are to soften the rock matrix in water over 1/2 hour to an hour period. The rock crumbles away easier the longer it sits in water.
These specimens come from the Victoria Mine in Navajun, Spain, and both the rock matrix and crystals are 100% naturally formed. This is a perfect kit for both kids and adults, and would make a great gift or even a fun party activity for you and your family/friends.
The photos are representative of the specimen(s) you will receive but don't picture the exact rock. The amount and size of cubes within each section of rock will vary from specimen to specimen. That being said, each rock comes from a section of the deposit that is guaranteed to contain 10 cubes minimum. The rock averages about 4" wide and the crystals within are typically between .1" and .6" wide, though in rare cases there may be an even larger crystal deep within the matrix.
Directions for revealing your pyrite cubes can be found on the side of each specimen's box. The results/haul from just one of our mining kits can be seen above.
Note - If you want to prepare the specimen with hand tools instead of the intended water method, the rock is fairly hard and will likely require small metal picks and an air scribe. These kits do not include any mechanical tools.

About Pyrite From Navajún, Spain
At first glance some people assume that these pyrite cubes are man-made, but the amazing thing is that they are natural! Pyrite from this location is famous for its beautiful shine, near-perfect cubic formation, and sculptural appearance. Because the matrix rock is soft, the cubes often come loose during collection. Care is taken during preparation to stabilize, repair, and make sure everything is remounted in its natural position: no specimens are composites. This means that nearly all of the pyrite cubes still in the rock from this locality have been remounted, and most clusters of multiple cubes have been stabilized.
The "Ampliación a Victoria" pyrite deposit is located 3 kilometers northwest from Navajún town in the Alcarama mountain chain. The history of mining in the area goes back to Romans mining for silver. Modern galena mining led to discovery of the pyrite in 1965, and since then specimens from this locality have been sought out by collectors worldwide. The largest crystal found to date was over 19 centimeters and weighed 9.5 kilograms!
FeS2, otherwise known as pyrite or 'Fool's Gold', contains about 47 percent iron and 53 percent sulfur. It gets the name 'fool's gold' because of its brassy golden color. The name pyrite comes from the Greek word pur meaning "fire": in ancient times pyrite was struck against flint to create sparks and start fires.
