1.5" Impressive Metacanthina Trilobite - Lghaft, Morocco
This is a stunning, 1.5" long specimen of the highly collectible trilobite, Metacanthina issoumourensis, from the Lower Devonian Lhandar Formation near Lghaft, Morocco. Its rich, chocolate-brown shell exhibits exceptional preservation, including beautifully defined eye facets in both eyes. The delicate, elongated genal spines have been meticulously prepared free-standing, showcasing the trilobite's intricate anatomy in remarkable three-dimensional detail. Dramatically perched atop a natural column of brown limestone, this striking specimen makes an impressive display and is completely free of restoration.
About Trilobites
Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
