2.4" Detailed Morocops Trilobite - Top Quality Specimen
This is a superb, 2.4" long Morocops (Barrandeops) trilobite from the Ofaten, Morocco. Top quality preparation on this specimen. The shell on the left hand side of the head and upper thorax is naturally a cream color, likely due to that area of the trilobite being close to a crack or surface causing minerals to leach from the shell. Excellent eye facet detail and less than 1% restoration.
Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet with over 25k described species, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to a hard exoskeleton (shell), they left a excellent fossil record.
