2.5" Spiny Comura Trilobite - Ofaten, Morocco
This is an exceptional 2.5" long Comura bultyncki trilobite from Ofaten, Morocco. Specimens of this species are renowned for their ornate, highly spined exoskeletons, which likely served as both armor and a deterrent to the predators of the Devonian seas. Comura also possessed large compound eyes with thousands of individual lenses—an adaptation that would have given it excellent vision in the sunlit reef environments it once inhabited. Their extravagant spines and elaborate ornamentation make them one of the most sought-after and visually striking trilobite species ever discovered.
Preparing a trilobite of this quality requires remarkable skill—60+ hours of precise work under microscope. The delicate, free-standing spines have been expertly exposed, and even the individual eye facets in both eyes are clearly visible.
This is a top-tier Comura, easily within the finest 5% of examples I’ve handled. Total restoration is minimal—about 3–4%, limited to small shell stabilization.

About Trilobites
Trilobites are an extinct class of marine arthropods that thrived for nearly 270 million years, from the early Cambrian to the end of the Permian period (around 521 to 252 million years ago). They are one of the most successful and diverse groups in the history of life, with over 25,000 described species spanning a wide range of sizes, shapes, and ecological niches. Known for their distinctive, segmented exoskeletons, trilobites provide invaluable insights into the evolutionary history of arthropods and the dynamics of ancient marine ecosystems.
