3.5" Gorgeous Morocconites Trilobite Fossil - Ofaten, Morocco

This is an impressive, 3.5" long specimen of the distinctive phacopid trilobite Morocconites malladoides, quarried near Ofaten, Morocco. This unusual species is distinguished by its elongated, pointed rostrum (snout) extending from the front of its head. While the function of this remarkable feature remains uncertain, it may have helped the trilobite burrow through soft seafloor sediments.

Exceptionally well-preserved and large for the species, this specimen is displayed in a perfectly prone position, with outstanding preparation revealing intricate shell detail. It exhibits approximately 2% shell restoration.

About Trilobites

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
