3.9" Fossil Insect (Crane Flies & Beetles) Plate - Utah
This is a fascinating 3.9" wide piece of shale featuring crane flies (order Diptera - family Tipulidae) and beetle (order Coleoptera) fossils. The largest beetle measures .25" long. There is a fossil leaf (Mimosites coloradensis) on the opposite side of this shale. The specimen was collected from the Green River Formation of Utah. While the Green River Formation is best know for its fish fossils, other areas produce incredible fossil plant and insect fauna.
