4.2" Fossil Flora (Neuropteris & Alethopteris) Plate - Kentucky

This is a fossil flora (Alethopteris sp., Neuropteris sp. and Calamites sp.) plate from the Breathitt Formation of Leslie County, Kentucky. Neuropteris is an extinct genus of fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction of most modern ferns. As with most seed ferns, Neurodontopteridaceae grew in tree form. Alethopteris is also an extinct genus of seed fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction. Calamites is an extinct genus of tree-like horsetails from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Kentucky and Ohio.
