8.85" Pennsylvanian Fossil (Lepidodendron) Plate - Pennsylvania

This is a 8.85" wide plate with scale tree (Lepidodendron sp.) fossils, collected from the Glenshaw Formation (Mahoning Shale) in Pennsylvania. Lepidodendron is a genus of extinct, primitive, vascular, tree-like plants most closely related to gill worts and club mosses, that grew up to 98ft (30 m) and had trunks 3.2ft (1 m) in diameter. It is from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian-aged Carboniferous Coal Forest.
