Fossil Gastropod (Platyceras) - Crawfordsville, Indiana

This fossil is a Platyceras equilateralis gastropod. The quality of preparation on this fossil is excellent - using skillful air abrasion techniques under a stereo microscope. The bottom of the rock has been cut flat to allow an aesthetic presentation without need for a stand.

It is believed that specimens from the Ramp Creek Limestone were buried in sediment from nearby deltas during storms. The resulting siltstone deposits are soft enough that fossils can be extracted in exquisite, three-dimensional relief.
