About Trilobites

Trilobites are an extinct group of marine arthropods that flourished for more than 270 million years, appearing in the Early Cambrian and disappearing at the end of the Permian. They are among the most recognizable fossils due to their segmented bodies, hard calcite exoskeletons, and remarkable diversity—over 20,000 species have been described worldwide. Trilobites occupied a wide range of ecological roles, from burrowers and scavengers to active swimmers, and their shed exoskeletons contributed heavily to the fossil record, making them invaluable for studying ancient marine environments and evolutionary biology.

Morocco is one of the world’s most important sources of trilobite fossils, producing exceptionally preserved specimens from the Paleozoic-era formations of the Anti-Atlas Mountains. The region’s Ordovician, Silurian, and Devonian strata contain a wealth of species, many of which are known for elaborate spines, ornate cephalons, and highly detailed eye structures. Skilled preparators remove these fossils from dense, fine-grained limestone using precision air scribes and microscopes—a labor-intensive process that reveals delicate anatomical features rarely seen in trilobites from other localities.
