2.8" Large, Bug-Eyed Coltraneia Trilobite Fossil - Ofaten, Morocco

This is an exceptionally large, 2.8" long specimen of Coltraneia, a distinctive Devonian trilobite collected from Ofaten Mountain, Morocco. Its most remarkable feature is its spectacular pair of elevated "tower eyes," each preserving hundreds of intricately defined eye facets. This unusual genus, historically referred to as Treveropyge, is particularly prized by collectors for its extraordinary eye structures and distinctive appearance.

The specimen exhibits excellent preservation and detailed preparation, beautifully showcasing its remarkable eyes and intricate exoskeleton. Restoration is limited to approximately 3% of the shell, confined to the right side of the thorax. The base of the limestone has been cut flat, so that it displays upright without the need for a stand.

About Trilobites

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
