5.9" Colorful Asaphid Trilobite With Antennae - Fezouata Formation

This 5.9" Asaphid trilobite (Ogyginus sp.) was collected from the famous Fezouata Formation of Morocco. It features attractive natural coloration that contrasts beautifully against the tan shale matrix. Both antennae are faintly preserved—an uncommon instance of soft-tissue preservation that is occasionally seen in trilobites from this deposit.

The specimen comes from a small pocket of similar asaphid trilobites, many of which display some level of antenna preservation.

There is minor restoration (approximately 1–2%) along a repaired crack in the shell. An acrylic display stand is included for presentation.

About Trilobites

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
