Two Crotalocephalina Trilobites On Free-Standing LImestone

This is a beautiful association of two well preserved Crotalocephalina gibbus trilobites from the Lhandar Formation near Atchana, Morocco. Measuring 3.4" and 3" long (if outstretched), both trilobites display excellent detail and have been meticulously prepared to highlight their intricate anatomy and natural coloration. Several additional partial trilobites are also exposed in the surrounding limestone, which has been skillfully sculpted to create an attractive, three-dimensional display.

Both trilobites exhibit exceptional preservation, with only about 2-3% restoration in total. The base of the rock has been cut flat so that it stands up nicely without the need for a display stand.

About Trilobites

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
