4.5" Large Zlichovaspis Trilobite - Healed Injury!

This is a 4.5" long trilobite (Zlichovaspis rugosa) collected from the Lower Devoniana (Pragian Stage) Lhandar Formation in Atchana, Morocco. It is fairly good sized for the species with excellent shell preservation and eye facet detail. One interesting aspect is that the right genal spine is pathalogical, likely a healed injury the trilobite sustained. Total restoration is about 2% spread out in a few small patches.

About Trilobites

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
