2.7" Rare Odontochile Trilobite - Morocco

This is a rare, 2.7" long Odontochile trilobite from the Lower Devonian Lhandar Formation of Morocco. This is a true Odontochile, rather than the much more common and superficially similar Zlichovaspis often mislabeled as Odontochile. The two genera can be distinguished by their anatomy: Odontochile has a more broadly rounded head (cephalon) and typically a shorter, broader-based tail spine, while Zlichovaspis has a more triangular head with a small forward projection and a longer, more pronounced tail spine.

This beautiful specimen is naturally laid out in a prone position, with excellent three-dimensional preservation and remarkably crisp eye facet detail in both compound eyes. Approximately 5% of the shell has been restored, primarily along the top of the glabella and dorsal axis.

About Trilobites

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
